Obituary

Terrence "Terry" Michael Curtin was born June 9, 1926, in Jefferson Township, McCook County, South Dakota.  He came to N.C. State in North Carolina from Purdue in 1974 to be Head of the Department of Veterinary Science, serving there until 1976 when he became the Founding Dean of the yet to be built new College of Veterinary Medicine at N.C. State.  He served in that capacity until his retired in 1992.

Terry will be greatly missed by his family wife Sharon of the home, sister, Kay Curtin Ficklin of Eureka, CA; his children: Melissa Polson (Solomons, MD), Joe Curtin (Portland, OR) Laurie and her husband Steve Pisershia (Connecticut); Jim and Leslie Curtin of (Charleston, SC);  stepdaughter, Merle. His grandchildren: Shannon and her husband Chris Bryant  (Virginia), Dr. Ryan Curtain and his wife Emily of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Chet Polson (Washington DC); Step-granddaughter, Erika Harms and Step-grandson, Blake Harms both of Raleigh, NC.

Terry will also be missed by many cousins, nieces and nephews and numerous friends around the country.  Over the years he has had frequent visits from dear friends who he regarded as his mentors and from his former students who regarded him as their mentor. Many of his good friends were the Deans and faculty of all the other Vet schools around the US and Canada.

The family would like to extend love and thanks to the wonderful Hospice people who showed such compassion in their care of Terry. We would like to especially thank:

Lucy Coombs, who looked after Terry over a period of several years – in Palliative care and then in Hospice; Genevieve and Sylvia, who were with him the first three months of 2020. Betsy & Zaida, who reached out to us constantly, encouraging us to talk about our feelings and making us feel better. Heidi, Terry's special nurse. They came to love each other. On-call nurses, Heather, Kella and Yana. Yana stayed with us with from 8:30 until midnight the night Terry passed away. Like all healthcare workers now, they are working tirelessly through this pandemic we're embroiled in. We thank them all so much.

There is a foundation for Terry that provides scholarships for Vet School students, if anyone would like to contribute in his memory.
