Obituary of Verdie Moreland

Verdie Stallings Moreland joined her heavenly Father on September 23, 2009. She was born in Snow Hill, Wayne County, NC, August 30, 1915, to the late James Walter and Sudie Elizabeth Ginn Stallings. Verdie is survived by her loving family; husband Donald; daughter Donna and husband David Britt of Cary; son Paul Ziglar and wife Tamara of Clover, SC; daughter-in-law Sandra Ziglar Bossie and husband Alan; brother J.W. Stallings of Windsor; sisters Eloise Partin and Hettie Wilson; sister-in-law Eranda Stallings; sister-in-law Marjorie Webster and husband Russell of Longmeadow, MA; brother-in-law Hubert Moreland of Springfield, MA; grandchildren Frank C. Ziglar III, Jacqueline and Samantha McBride, Robin Reeves and husband Stuart of Charleston, SC; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Major Frank C. Ziglar and son Frank C. Ziglar, Jr.

Verdie was a graduate of Hardbarger's Business School. For many years, she was associated with what is now N.C. State University in various capacities, initially with the business office and later as a secretary with several different departments. She was a long time faithful member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Verdie enjoyed square dancing, surf fishing, gardening, flower arranging, and developing azalea bonsai. She was an active and long time supporter of the N.C. Museum of Arts, the N.C. State Woman's Club, Friends of the NCSU Libraries, N.C. State Alumni Association, Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council, and Meals-on-Wheels. Verdie was instrumental in establishing facility, staff, and book endowments with the NCSU Libraries and fellowships and scholarships in several NCSU Colleges. She also was a founding member of the Hills and Pines Garden Club. Members of the Club, in 1963 and 1964, worked with Raleigh City Officials in the development of facilities including foot trails, a nature preserve, the Meditation Shelter, picnic shelter, and other amenities at what is now called Lake Johnson Park.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to her doctor, Steven Liebowitz; her faithful and compassionate caregivers Lendora Tyson, Tammy Faulcon, Terry Paul, and Loviney Bell; the members of the Hills and Pines Garden Club; and their many friends for the loving care, support, and devotion shown to Verdie.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Friday, September 25, 2009 at Montlawn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
