Obituary of Virginia Johnson

Virginia Manning Johnson, 88, of Raleigh, died Sunday morning, May 31, 2009 at Blue Ridge Health Care.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Montlawn Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.

A native of Johnston County, Virginia was a homemaker for all but five years when in the 1950's she very proudly served as one of Raleigh's first women police officers. She lived on Vandora Avenue in Garner for over 40 years and was married to the late J. Dwight Johnson and of this union was born their only child, Annette.

Virginia was a charter member of the St. Mary's Civitan Club in Garner serving as Parlimentarian for ten years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Garner for 20 years. Her greatest achievement however was the unconditional love that revolved around her family. She was a truly special lady who will be missed by all who knew her.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Annette Johnson Lassiter and her husband, William Ellis Lassiter of Raleigh; granddaughters, Sharyn Lassiter Register and her husband, Jesse of Hallsboro, Amy Lassiter Lancaster and her husband, Kevin of Carolina Beach; great granddaughter, Christina Register of Hallsboro; great grandsons, Camp and Koa Lancaster of Carolina Beach; half brother, Sonny Seawell; half sisters, Libby Richardson and Sandy Seawell, all of South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Rudolph and Fab Manning; sister, Ruby Creech and half sister, Lois Rogers.

The family offers their most sincere thanks to everyone at Elmcroft Assisted Living for the wonderful care and love shown to Virginia and her family during the five years she was a resident. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Blue Ridge Health Care for the loving care they provided Virginia in the final weeks of her life.

Flowers are welcomed or memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 3117 Poplarwood Ct., Suite 114, Raleigh, NC 27604 or to your favorite charity.
