Walter Daniel "Walt" Smith, aged 89, passed away on September 10, 2024, in Raleigh, NC. Born on January 30, 1935, in Summerville, PA, Walt dedicated his life to his family, his faith, and his country. Walt proudly served in the Marines, where his commitment and discipline were evident. After his military service, he completed his bachelors degree at Penn State University. He then led a successful 30-year career at IBM as a technical writer, a role that he embraced with diligence and pride.
A devout Catholic, Walt was deeply spiritual and an active member of his church community. His faith played a significant role throughout his life, guiding him as a husband, father, and friend.
Walt was a dedicated husband to his late wife, Sharlene Mae Smith, and a loving father to his late son, Mark Christian Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Robyn Carrell Mangrum; son-in-law, Rick Scott Mangrum; grandsons, Christian Scott Mangrum and Reed Daniel Mangrum; and brothers, Richard and Darryl Smith.
An avid reader, Walt enjoyed exploring various genres and accumulated a vast collection of books. His hobbies included woodworking, walking, bird watching, and spending quality time with his daughter. He also imparted his love for gardening and woodworking to his grandsons, emphasizing the joy of creating and nurturing.
Walt's life was marked by his drive to stay physically active, a testament to his belief in maintaining a strong and healthy body. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively, proudly visiting all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico.
Services will be held at Montlawn, 2911 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, on October 4, 2024, at 6:30 PM. Montlawn is also assisting the family with arrangements.
Walt's legacy of kindness, wisdom, and resilience will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a pillar of strength and love in his community.
