Obituary of William Fleming
William Bill McKay Fleming, Sr.
William Bill McKay Fleming, Sr., 85, died July 11, 2008, after an extended illness which he handled with grace and courage.
A native of Wake County, Bill was born October 6, 1922, to the late Carey Hunter, Sr. and Mary Cranor Bryan Fleming. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1941, and graduated from Wake Forest University, in 1948, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Bill was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in WWII as a member of the U.S. Navy Air Corps as a gunner and navigator. He attended First Baptist Church, Raleigh his whole life. During his active years he served the church as Deacon, Adult Sunday School Superintendant, and Chair of the Everette Miller Bible Class Scholarship Fund and various other church committees and ministries. Bill was the founder and president of The Card Shop, Inc. in Raleigh, which he established in 1952. He was a former member of the Raleigh Rotary Club and an active member of the Homebuilders Association of Raleigh/Wake County where he was a lifetime member of the Board of Directors and The Spike Club.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Martin Fleming, of Raleigh; two daughters Mary Beth Christian and husband John of McLean, VA and Ruth Goldstraw and husband Ron of Severna Park, MD; son Bill Fleming and wife Laura of Raleigh; seven grandsons John Christian and wife Laura, Bryan Christian, Ron Goldstraw, Mark Christian, Michael Goldstraw, Will Fleming, and Daniel Christian. He is preceded in death by two brothers Carey and Bryan Fleming and his sister Mary White.
The family will be receiving friends at Bill and Marys home on Sunday, July 13, 2008, from 3-5 p.m. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 14, 2008, at 2:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Everette Miller Bible Class Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603.
