William G. Hendrix, O.D., F.A.A.O. passed away at Rex Hospital on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
William "Bill" was born in Statesville, NC. He was the son of the late Walter Worth Hendrix and Ruth Gay Hendrix. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter W. Hendrix, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, D. Ann Voorhees King-Hendrix; stepsons, Ron King of Jacksonville, FL and Charles "Chuck" King of Atlanta, GA; step-grandchildren, Joe Lance Albati, Najia "Gia" King, Van King, and Brooke King. Step great-grandchildren, Anna Linhardt and Irie Harris; niece, Anna Hendrix Caton; sisters-in-law, June Hall (Tom), Juanita Hendrix, Bobbie Lane, Nancy Seivers and Mary Alys Cherry.
Dr. Bill Hendrix had a very colorful career - Statesville Public Schools (1-12), Wake Forest University, BS degree, Southern College of Optometry, Dr. of Optometry (graduated with honors), Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 701 Pharmacology Course, First Lieutenant US Army, Medical Service Corps., five years, Fort Stewart Army Hospital, Chief of Eye Clinic, Ft. Stewart, GA, private Optometric practice 52 years in Raleigh, NC, first Optometrist in Garner, NC. He belonged to the following organizations, Eastern District of Optometry, NC State Optometric Society, NC State Board of Examiners in Optometry, Optometric Student Procurement, UNC, NC Optometric Foundation, Forth Congressional District, NC House District, NC Senatorial District, Southern Council of Optometrist, President 1980, Southern Council Education Foundation, American Optometric Association, World Council of Optometry, Emeritus Award, Sigma Alpha Sigma, Beta Sigma Kappa, Sir Walter Lions Club, Garner Chamber of Commerce, 32nd degree Mason, member of Amran Shrine Temple, Wake County Board of Health, Oxford Orphanage Board of Directors. NC Commission for the Blind, Capital City Club Charter Member, Optometrist of the South, Emeritus Award for Vision Source of Independent Optometrists.
The family will receive friends from 11am -12 pm, Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Montlawn Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12 pm at Montlawn Memorial Park.
