Obituary of William Smith

William "Bill" Burke Smith, 87, of Raleigh, NC passed away Tuesday morning, March 11, 2014 at The Oaks of Mayview.

Born October 19, 1926 in Raleigh, NC, he is the son of the late Farmer S. Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth L. Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Raymond B. Smith in 2006; brothers, Farmer, Jimmy, and John Smith; and sister, Julia.

Bill graduated from Broughton High School and then joined the United States Marine Corp. at age 17, where he served in World War II. After being honorably discharged from the military, he graduated from NC State University with a Business Degree. Bill's career spanned over 45 years working as the Sales Manager at McCracken Supply, and later on as a real estate broker in the Raleigh area. He was an avid quail hunter and fisherman. Bill and his buddies Carl Thorne and Dr. Sydney Martin fished from Kerr Lake to the Florida Keys. He was a member of the Masons at William G. Hill Lodge and a Shriner. Bill was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC.

Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Brockwell Smith; daughters, Carolyn S. Wicker and husband Lee, Julie A. Smith and husband Tom; grandchildren, Brock Ridout and his wife Sara, Matt Ridout and his wife Allyson; great-grandchildren, Jonah and Ava; and several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
